History: 18 years and over: 40 Euro

The Castlebar International Walking Festival was founded in 1967. Mr. Joseph Egan was the first chairman of the organising committee. The local ramblers club under the leadership of Fr. Charles O' Malley was very active at the time and helped get the festival off the ground. The festival was reasonably successful in the early years. Peter Braaksma from Holland and others such as Frau Augusta Koster, Germany, Maitias Martin, England and Gabour Renner, Switzerland were a wonderful help in promoting the festival. From the outset good contact was established with the Nijmegen Walks and their organising board, The Royal Netherlands Board of Physical Culture ( K.N.B.L.O. ) Because organised walking was virtually unknown in Ireland, the survival of the walks relied heavily on the participation of the continental walkers. In the first year, approximately one hundred walkers made up of five nationalities took part. The early years saw exchanges between students from the Netherlands and Castlebar take part in respective walks, indeed, this practice continued into the 1970's. The first years got off to a great start and were extremely successful. The continental walkers were loud in their praise of the organisation and the beautiful scenery, which Castlebar had to offer. They were quick to appreciate the uniqueness of the event, both the natural physical surroundings and the warm atmosphere. A turning point occurred in 1987, when the Castlebar International Four Days Walks was invited to join with seven other countries to form the International Marching League.

The walks are non competitive and participants are expected to walk at their own pace. Participants are requested however, to reach the final checkpoint before 16.30 hrs. The road walks are on lightly trafficked roads, while the rambles take you across broad bogs and mountainsides, sandy roads and moorlands. Routes are sign posted and guides are provided for rambles. ( it is advised that you bring a spare pair of shoes and socks )

Registration forms should be returned to us with the appropriate fees in advance of the walks where possible. It is possible to pre register on the Wednesday evening before the walks when there is also an important briefing session for those who are participating on all four days. Individuals wishing to take part in only one, two or three days may register on the day they wish to walk. Registration is also available online on www.castlebar4dayswalks.com

A certificate will be presented to each walker who completes the walks. A walks medal will be presented to each walker who completes the 20 k.m, 40 k.m or ramble on all four days subject to the age categories detailed in the table. Present medal holders who complete the scheduled walks will be presented with a repeat emblem to be pinned on the medal ribbon.
